We currently collaborate with a wide range of institutions and individuals to further our goal of fostering interdisciplinary research and training to understand tropical environmental issues and develop solutions. Below we list some of the institutions with whom we exchange faculty and students, and collaborate on research projects. We are eager to expand this network.

Cardenas, Tabasco, Mexico
We have done collaborative work in the areas of agroecology and sustainable
rural development, with a focus on traditional Mayan farming systems, the transition
to modern farming systems, and the impacts of globalization on local agricultural
economies.
Centro Agronómico Tropical de Investigación
Enseñanza (CATIE)
The Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center (CATIE) is an
internationally known regional center dedicated to research and graduate education
in agriculture, agroforestry, and the management, conservation and sustainable
use of natural resources. Its regular members include the Inter-American Institute
for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), Belize, Bolivia, Colombia, Costa Rica,
the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua,
Panama, Paraguay and Venezuela. During summer 2002 we sponsored an agroecology

Duyure Adelante
Duyure Adelante is an NGO formed in response to the devastating effects of Hurricane
Mitch, a class 5 hurricane that tore through Central America in late October,
1998. This group now provides project assistance to the citizens of Duyure,
in the department of Choluteca, Honduras through various agriculture, education,

Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuaria
(EMBRAPA). Ministry of Agriculture, Center for Family Agriculture and Ecological
Agriculture, Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sur, Brazil
This center specializes agroecology, sustainable agriculture, and community
development for small farm communities and offers training programs and exchanges
in which we have participated.

Salvadoran Research Program On Environment And
Development (PRISMA)
PRISMA is a center of reference, research and incidence on themes associated
to development and environment in El Salvador. PRISMA works for the construction
of consensus that lead to viable development that is environmentally sound and
socially inclusive. Our work is based on a constant, broad, collaborative and
transparent interaction with the principle actors in social and environmental
development. Some of the current areas of research include: water management

Red Mesoamericana de Recursos Bióticos
This is a new Latin-American network of nine universities in Mexico, plus another
twelve universities and institutes from seven Central American Countries. Its
objectives are: "To create a Central American Network of Biological Resources,
affiliated with the existing Regional Network in Mexico, that through exchange
of experiences, human and material resources, will increase the capacities of
the participating resources to develop projects in the area of biological conservation.

Graduate Program in Anthropology
and Cultural Ecology, Universidad Iberoamericana (UIA), Mexico City, Mexico
We are pursuing collaboration between our institutions for the development of
projects, courses, and student exchange in the areas of agroecology, cultural
ecology, impacts of globalization on rural agricultural communities, immigration
issues, and sustainable agriculture. One UCSC graduate student spent four weeks

Main campus in Montecillos, Texcoco, Mexico State, Mexico
This school is the primary campus of the National Graduate Program
in Agriculture for Mexico. We are in the process of developing an exchange agreement
with their new Ph.D. program in agroecology. In summer 2002 one of our students
spent two months working in laboratory and field projects to learn approaches
and methodologies to the study of plant pathogen management in Mexican agroecosystems.
Universidad de Quintana Roo (UQROO), Programa de Manejo Integrado de
Recursos Costeros, Chetumal, Quintana Roo, Mexico
We have a draft agreement of exchange and collaboration between UCSC and UQROO
for the development of projects and student exchange (both graduate and undergraduate)
in the areas of agroecology, sustainable agriculture, natural lands and reserve

Universidad Autonoma del Yucatan, Program in Conservation and Management
of Tropical Natural Resources (PROTROPICO), Merida, Yucatan, Mexico
This program has a Master’s in the broad area of natural resource
management in the tropics, including agroecology, restoration, reserve design
and management, and sustainable agriculture. They are interested in an exchange
of undergraduate and graduate students, faculty exchange, and research collaboration.

We have a draft agreement between our institutions for student exchange
at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as to carry out joint

University of El Salvador, Master's Program
On Sustainable Tropical Agriculture
The program seeks to provide high quality
education to professionals working in the areas of agriculture, natural resources
management and rural development. A strong emphasis is placed on bringing recognized
visiting professors in relevant areas in an effort to improve the content of
the course work, and thesis research. The program consists of 1 year of courses
and 1 year of thesis research.
